Background

My roots lie just outside the lovely city of Antwerp, in the Flemish speaking part of Belgium.  I studied Mechanical Engineering (BS/MS '96) at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven , a great place with an amazing college spirit. I also lived a year in Zaragoza, Spain, as an exchange student. I then received a MS in Electrical Engineering ('97) at Stanford University , and am now a PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering, in the group of Jim Harris . I do my experiments in Ike Chuang's lab at IBM Almaden Research Center , in the hills outside San Jose.

Research - a tale of cats and (fast) computers

Have you ever seen a cat that is dead and alive at the same time ? Right, I haven't either. But, if your cat were very small, say as small as a nuclear spin, it really could exist in two different states at the same time. For example, a nuclear spin (which is like a tiny barmagnet) can be simultaneously pointing in two opposite directions ! If you would like to get a feel for how this magic feature of quantum mechanics could lead to computers that solve certain problems beyond the reach of any classical computer, go to my page about a bulk spin quantum computer.

For more information about our project, visit the NMR QC project website, look at my papers or talks or recent press coverage.

Making things up

Since the Fall of '98, I'm a member of the SImps (Stanford Improvisors). We play improvisation theater and have a great time together.

The wild, wild west

As of Fall 2000, I am an instructor for a class on Wilderness Skills in the Stanford Geology department (Geology 7). More great times!

When I'm not in the lab, I'm probably up in the mountains, out on the bay, or down in the City (San Francisco, that is).
